Background of the Study

Sensationalism in news reporting is a growing concern in journalism, with many outlets focusing on dramatic, exaggerated, or emotionally charged stories to attract viewers, listeners, or readers. In Sokoto South Local Government Area, Sokoto State, sensationalism has raised ethical concerns about the impact of such reporting on public perception, trust in the media, and the overall integrity of news outlets. While sensationalism may increase audience engagement, it often compromises journalistic standards such as accuracy, fairness, and objectivity. This study explores the ethical challenges faced by media outlets in Sokoto South as they navigate the balance between producing engaging content and adhering to ethical journalism practices. Understanding the consequences of sensational news reporting on public opinion and the ethical implications for media professionals will provide valuable insights into the role of media in shaping public perceptions (Ahmed & Suleiman, 2024; Bello & Haruna, 2023).
